Electricity Update: Progress report & vandalism delays (28 May 2026)

Following a meeting this morning between Eskom management, the Overstrand Municipality, and neighbouring municipalities in the Overberg District, we present the latest update on power restoration efforts.

Restoration efforts in the Western Cape are progressing steadily. Across the province, 85% of affected areas have been successfully re-energised, while 15% remain offline.

On a lower level, Overstrand and Theewaterskloof, the Medium Voltage (MV) restoration is at 22 lines restored of 32 affected MV lines. This translates to 60% already restored, while 40% is in the process of being restored.

Municipal engagement with Eskom remains ongoing to ensure a co-ordinated response effort. However, the repair work and restoration of electricity supply to Eskom direct customers remain Eskom’s responsibility.

Eskom also informed the municipality of a planned power outage on 4 June 2026 (probably 08:00 – 17:00) at the Hermanus Substation to replace a 66kV transformer breaker. This work will affect municipal direct customers in Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai areas. Further details regarding the planned outage will be communicated separately.

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
A line reroute is required. The expected restoration of the Hermanus F1 line by 29 May 2026 has been further delayed due to vandalism and theft.

Approximately 2km of power lines were stolen overnight in yet another incident. This was reported to SAPS who is investigating the incident.

Municipal Manager Dr Dean O’Neill requested Eskom to pursue harsh prosecution against those responsible for the alleged cable theft incidents that have contributed to the extended electricity outage.

Two suspects have reportedly already been arrested in connection with the recent incidents, while concerns remain regarding organised criminal syndicates operating within the Overstrand municipal area.

Repair teams continue to work on the damaged sections.

Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR): To be confirmed following assessment

Stanford Lagoon Farms
Repair work along the Hermanus F2 line supplying Stanford Lagoon farms is progressing well.
Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR): 29 May 2026

Papiesvlei
Approximately 70% of the Stanford F3/F1 Papiesvlei line has already been restored.

Wet and muddy conditions continue to delay access to at least five poles that remain on the ground.

Repairs will continue on the remaining approx. 15 poles; however, the wet ground conditions continue to hamper restoration efforts.

Electricity supply was initially expected to be restored by 29 May 2026, but the restoration date has now been revised.

Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR): 31 May 2026

Buffeljagsrivier
Repair work continues in the Buffeljagsrivier area.
Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR): 5 June 2026

Hangklip Area
While the main electricity network has largely been restored in Betty’s Bay, Rooiels and Pringle Bay, some isolated households remain without supply.

In Betty’s Bay, several homes near a mini-substation remain affected, while in Pringle Bay a small number of homes are still without electricity due to a faulty mini-substation currently out of service.

Repair teams continue working on these localised LV faults.
